I agree with your taxonomy of the types of Dylan covers out there. I am similarly besotted by Cat power's incredible ability to re-inhabit songs and make them hers. I would put Nina Simone's "Tom Thumb's Blues" up there as a singular achievement that is both evocative of Dylan's original but completely her own.
